In simple terms, Business success equals wealth by applying a simple formula: increase revenue, grow margins and decrease expenses and costs. Other suggested methods include core wealth formulas.

What's your formula? How is your Business tracking during these challenging economic times?

Since our article ‘Is There a Winning Formula for Success (June 2024) 10 Tips', I have continued to follow this question to seek and find answers. I hope the following provides further insight.

Recently, a consumer expert has highlighted the impending wealth transfer as Baby Boomers shift their wealth to younger generations over the next two decades. This presents challenges particularly in the luxury goods market, where luxury brands have always run on scarcity, status and heritage. These aren't necessarily the reasons younger consumers value. Businesses need to be aware of these changed wants and expectations.

For example, a WA luxury jeweller is already seeing the next generation spending differently from their parents and grandparents. They are also shopping smarter, mixing high-priced items with budget-cost ones.

Tip: To stay in the game and be relevant, Businesses need to respond to changes like this.

Other examples include:

One of the major supermarket giants, in a bid to compete with its competitors, is exploring new opportunities.  This will see a focus on its fast-growing online operation with a bold agenda for digital customer engagement.  The CEO acknowledged that customers are looking for specials; value-seeking shoppers are here to stay and are shopping around.

Additionally, the supermarket has outsourced jobs offshore for savings.

  • Tip: Businesses need to operate smarter to survive. Research, follow trends and issues to stay in touch and ahead. Know your competitors’ activities and your customers’ behaviours and needs.

A popular discount Retail giant has announced, 'We listened to our customers, and we're bringing the check-outs back to the front, which has been really well received'.  Our new floor plan is designed to make the shopping experience simpler, more convenient, and more enjoyable for customers. A spokesperson advised investors, 'The new store format was driving higher sales through increased shopping between departments'! And who doesn't want that!

Additionally, to add convenience and flexibility, new services like 'click and collect' were being offered.

  • Tip: Listen to customer feedback and act accordingly.  Focus on the customer's expectations and experience.

Within this chain, its pharmacy operation is leaning into the success formula.

This will see the Business betting heavily on an expanded private label range to boost sales and drive growth. This is a key strategic focus, allowing us to respond quickly to customer trends, offer greater variety and value for our customers and create exclusive ranges that aren't available elsewhere

A spokesperson said 'private label is delivering strongly for the Pharmacy and associated beauty and wellness operations, with sales up more than 20% year-on-year'.

  • Tip: investment in building capability across brand and product development, sourcing and merchandise.

A leading jewellery retailer is already banking on Black Friday and Christmas sales to keep its profit momentum. A spokesperson was pleased to announce a jump in sales, saying, ‘Our business tends to do best during big promotional periods. We are also listening to our customers and teams, have simplified the business and doubled down on delivering quality jewellery.

Tip: Review, assess and act. This has seen a refocus on execution, improved product curation, and personalised ranges.

A Mexican-flavoured fast food chain is opening new restaurants in Australia after failing in its bid to enter the saturated US market. A spokesperson said ‘that mistakes had been made’. ‘Australia is our foundation, and the focus will be on drive-thrus to cater for convenience. Consumers resonate with our value offerings, particularly our mini range’.

  •  Tip: Research your market. Be aware before tackling highly competitive, saturated markets. Know your niche and territory.

The chicken-licking restaurant outlets, you know the one, have found that changes to late-night trading hours may not have provided as much of a boost in sales as hoped for. But despite this, a CEO said there was an exciting growth plan in place locally, including promotional windows and menu innovations.

  • Tip: Be prepared to try new things. The company is looking to launch a breakfast trial on the Gold Coast. It’s also launching a new drink and beverage range nationally.
