In simple terms, leaving a legacy is ‘something’ handed down from the past. Depending on the context, it can be the impact on future generations, the inheritance of property or money, or outdated technology.

If we zoom in on this description, the takeaway is that true legacy is not about monuments, glory, fame, or wealth. A true positive legacy is the lasting imprint you leave behind through the values you instil, the lives you touch, and the positive impressions you make. These are enduring and intangible contributions.

In Leadership and all walks of life, leaving a memorable legacy for all the ‘right’ reasons is something money can't buy, or win in a raffle!

In recent weeks, we have seen this true example of legacy demonstrated in the words and actions of two renowned people: an ex-footballer and a cancer research professor. Both were cast into the public spotlight for their heroic and staunch stand against adversity, fighting for their lives against terminal illness.

But it is the way they went about this fight that has inspired so many. Both displayed and demonstrated behaviours that won the hearts, support and following of many, including family, friends, communities, and strangers.

Humility, bravery, honesty, courage, prepared to fight the beast, determination, family values, loving, caring of others.  A fitting description. A list of inspirational qualities that made them the men they were. Qualities they leave behind as their memorable legacy.

Building a memorable legacy for all the right reasons begins at any age. We see young people making tough decisions in tackling life challenges and barriers. Courage and determination often describe their actions. You can see these brave faces at Telethons, Fun runs, and everyday activities. Many leave a positive legacy for those who come after them.

In Business, Leaders can forge a pathway to create a positive legacy, to guide, influence, and make a difference for all the right reasons, now and in the future.

A solid framework for this journey includes:

  • Develop a clear Leadership Plan – define the qualities you want to be acknowledged for and build into your words, actions and behaviours. Self-assess and check your performance. Are your activities aligned with your vision, Company mission & goals?

  • Lead with Integrity & Authenticity – lead by example, make decisions guided by ethical principles. Be open, honest, and transparent to build and gain trust and loyalty. Own your successes, failures and mistakes; learn and grow from them.

  • Empower Future Leaders – cultivate strong future leaders by providing support, mentoring and delegating responsibilities. Back this by providing relevant training and the tools for team members to build their skills, capacities, and abilities.

  • Seek Feedback – self-awareness, insight. Invite feedback to gauge how others see and experience you. This is an opportunity to adjust your leadership approach if needed. Value constructive, honest evaluation to help personal development, improvement, and growth.

  • Make a Difference – monitor, reflect, ask yourself: Are you making a positive difference, a beneficial contribution to society by the way you live and connect your Business goals to the larger ‘why’ picture? Even the most important and prominent Leaders can act with kindness, leaving a meaningful footprint.

Are you on a pathway, a journey that will leave behind a memorable legacy for all the right reasons?
